About Chisel Sharpening Jigs

Chisels are an extremely useful and versatile tool. However, you can't get very far, very fast if your chisel is dull. The best and most efficient way to sharpen a chisel is by using a chisel jig. These useful tools help you turn out a sharp chisel in no time. They work right along with a grinder and are extremely helpful. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Significance

    • A chisel sharpening jig allows you to put the exact same edge on your chisel every time. If you know the angle of the original edge, you can also set the jig to duplicate it. This means you work smarter, since each chisel is designed with a certain angle edge to perform different tasks. Without a jig, you could also very easily ruin or damage a chisel.

    Types

    • Most chisel jigs are made out of wood using a few simple parts. A few are made out of metal. Commonly, the jigs are set up to sharpen chisels at a variety of angles so you need only one chisel jig to sharpen all your chisels. If you have very long handled chisels, you probably will need to buy different jigs however. Many people make their own, however you can buy professional, manufactured chisel jigs at a hardware store.

    Function

    • A chisel jig is set beside a grinder and the chisel is then laid on top of it. The chisel jig has an angled block of wood where the head of the chisel is rested. Then there is a long arm that extends backwards and has a rest for the end of the chisel handle. Most jigs have an adjustable arm, but some will only go so far. You simply lay the chisel in the jig, so the edge matches up with the grinder, and work it forward as the grinder sharpens the chisel and creates a new edge.

    Considerations

    • A chisel jig is used to help you sharpen chisels faster and more effectively. That means it needs to be stable enough to securely hold the chisel. It also needs to be long enough the accommodate the chisel handle. It is wise not to sacrifice speed for effectiveness when sharpening a chisel, because the whole point of getting your chisel sharp is to save time. A faulty chisel jog could very easily ruing the edge of your chisel by cutting it at the wrong angle, and leaving a burr on the end of the metal.

    Benefits

    • A god chisel jig should be versatile and able to sharpen all types of chisels, even angled ones. That means you should have a handle rest that fans out to allow you to move the chisel handle in different directions. It also needs to be heavy enough so it won't move. Chisel jigs may also be built for sharpening stones, if you don't have a grinder.
