What is an HVLP Sprayer?

HVLP (high volume, low pressure) sprayers are spray gun devices that are used for spray finishing purposes. Whether you want to give a cabinet a glossy sheen, or give a car an immaculate painting job, HVLP sprayers are highly convenient, doing jobs that used to only be done by professionals with spray booths and pricey equipment. However, thanks to HVLP sprayers, people can spray finish things themselves. HVLP sprayers are perfect if you want to attain a flawless finish.

  • HVLP sprayers can be used to add final touches to furniture or to spray cabinets, and anything else you can imagine. The goal of HVLP sprayers is to provide "factory finish" style results. HVLP sprayers provide a smooth finish that normal airless paint sprayers simply cannot, as these sprayers apply a large amount of paint (and high pressure) at a very rapid rate.

  • HVLP (high volume, low pressure) sprayers provide spray at much lower pressures, which makes sure that your finish will not be over-atomized. This lessens the chances of overspray and provides natural looking, smooth results. HVLP sprayers can apply other things other than spray paint, including alkyd finish paints, alkyd primers, and clear wood finishes like lacquer, varnish and acrylic urethane.

  • There are several different types of HVLP sprayers, mainly compressor units and turbine units. Compressor units utilize piston air compressors to receive the necessary amount of air. Turbine units have a series of multi-finned blades to provide large volumes of air at low pressures.

  • When purchasing an HVLP sprayer of your own, the most important part to consider is the actual spray gun itself. Typical prices for spray guns range between $50 for an inexpensive gun, up to several hundred dollars for a more reliable sprayer. With a cheaper spray gun, you'll probably get one or two decent uses out of it before you have to throw it away.

  • There are a lot of online vendors that sell HVLP sprayers. For vast, diverse selections of HVLP sprayers, you should check out websites including Woodcraft.com, Tools Plus, Drill Spot, Empowered Equipment, Southern Tool and Eastwood Company. You should also check out national chain stores such as Sears, Lowes or Home Depot, as they stock HVLP sprayers as well.
