History
-
Pampered Chef began in in 1980 when a housewife launched a company based on the model set forth by another direct sales company. She hosted parties in her own home where she invited friends to try different kitchen gadgets. Doris Christopher continued to run the company for several years, offering the products to other sales people. In 2002 the company was bought out by Berkshire Hathaway Corporation. That company still owns Pampered Chef today and uses the same business model.
Features
-
Pampered Chef relies on its consultants for much of its business. The consultants make an investment into the company and in return, get the catalogues and supplies they need to get started. The consultants host parties and events where they show off different products made by the company and sell those products to customers. The consultant receives a commission based on their sales. Pampered Chef also offers consultants the chance to host their own website affiliated with the company.
Types
-
Pampered Chef primarily relies on consultants to sell their merchandise. The consultants host events where they discuss the products in depth and show customers how to use the products. They even show customers different recipes they can create at home with the same products. Now, Pampered Chef also has its own website with the products all for sale on the site. Customers can order their newest items online, without waiting for a party or finding a consultant in their area.
Geography
-
While Pampered Chef was originally founded in the United States, it's since grown to include other countries as well. Today there are offices in Germany, Canada and the United Kingdom. The United States company is still the largest of all the offices, with thousands of consultants working independently. The other countries host smaller versions, though they still work on the same business plan, using consultants and websites to sell their merchandise. Following the U.S., Canada is the largest of its subsidiaries.
Considerations
-
Those who decide to sell Pampered Chef products must apply for the position with the company and include a variety of information. They must have a minimum of four dates in mind, with those dates being the first four cooking shows they host. At these events they show the products available from the company and show customers how those products are used to create different recipes. Potential consultants must be at least 18 years old and have a credit card to pay for their consultant kit.
