What is a Biometric Device?

A biometric device is a device by which a machine can read people's personal information to tell who they are. They are often used in security situations such as the military and other secure locations. Biometric devices are used to read fingerprints, DNA, eyes, and voice recognition. These devices are very important and make excellent security barriers because they are very hard to forge. In the future it is likely that many passwords and security systems will use biometric devices.

  1. History

    • Biometric devices first became available for use around the 1960s. The first biometric devices were fingerprint readers. The idea of biometric devices caught people's attention and many videos and TV shows used the idea of biometric devices such as Mission Impossible. Once scientists discovered a way to read DNA the other types of biometric devices were developed. Now many biometric devices are in use in many different fields of industry.

    Effects

    • Biometric devices are capable of many different effects. They can read fingerprints, which can cause a reaction that will unlock or lock doors, or read eye movements, or even DNA. It's also possible for biometric devices to read voices. The most common place to find biometric devices are in hospitals, law enforcement, and security locations. Biometric devices are also used in the medical field. They are used to film the inside of the body to see where surgeries need to happen and other similar procedures.

    Function

    • There are many functions for biometric devices. They are often used in medical settings to read different areas of body functions. Many medical procedures would not be available without the use of biometric devices. Another main function for biometric devices is to protect valuable and unstable environments. Many high level security locations require a password protected by a biometric device. While in movies it is easy to bypass these security measures, it is much harder and real life, and they are quite safe.

    Benefits

    • Some of the greatest benefits to biometric devices occur in the medical field. Many medical procedures would not be available for use without biometric devices. Pacemakers, artificial organs, laser surgeries, and many other medical procedures would not be possible. Security has also benefited from the use of biometric devices. The military is probably the field that has benefited from biometric devices the most. Many of the special operations that the military does with biometric devices would be much harder without them.

    Theories/Speculation

    • It is likely that biometric devices will become increasingly popular for use in many different fields. Password protection by biometrics might soon be used for computers, or banking, or any other place where a password is used. Further medical advances will also continue to be made. One of the newest things that has been created is the use of artificial organs. If they can be used then even more lives will be able to be saved. The military is also making advances in the field of biometrics as well. Biometrics will probably be available for every field in the near future.
