For those who want to travel but cannot afford to take a vacation from work or family, a weekend trip offers a solution. Trips can be local and international, and meet various needs. It only takes a long weekend to have a rewarding vacation experience.

From Quick Guide: Guide to Weekend Vacations

    Planning

  1. Create an itinerary before you go. Due to the small amount of time you have, proper planning for the weekend trip is critical to make the most out of your vacation. Figure out what area you wish to travel to and think of activities you want to do for each day. Keep your activities near each other so you don't spend too much time driving from place to place.
  2. Types

  3. Types of weekend trips include a road trip with friends, visiting a relative, traveling interstate and a romantic getaway. A road trip is more spontaneous and can require little to no planning. However, it is essential that you have some idea of what you want to accomplish at the end of travel, such as see a particular sight or try a certain activity. A romantic getaway includes finding the right hotel and ambiance for the couple, and traveling interstate requires detailed maps and emergency kits.
  4. Deals

  5. Find travel deals that will save you money and time during your vacation. There are many places where you can find deals such as Priceline.com, exclusive clubs (like AAA), independent tour companies and local travel agents. Be sure to plan two months or more in advance to make sure you can still get the best packages.
  6. Packing

  7. Everyone knows that packing light is essential, but what is also important is to know how to maximize the space. Roll your clothes and neatly arrange them one on top of the other, and transfer heavy and bulky items to your carry-on. You can afford to do this on a weekend trip because the clothes you will be bringing are more casual and you can hang them soon enough when you get to your destination to avoid further wrinkles. Dresses and skirts should be folded and wrapped in plastic bags and laid flat on the bottom of your suitcase.
  8. Expert Insight

  9. Before a long driving trip, have your car checked by a local mechanic to make sure that it is suitable for long driving. Many people rent a car to use for a weekend trip, to minimize the wear and tear of their car. If you are going internationally, plan a trip to a country that is closer to your place of origin, because international flights can take as much as two days from your vacation time. Only pack snacks in small and sealed packs, because you only need this during the travel segment of your vacation. Everything in terms of food and water can be obtained at your destination.
