Flowers are beautiful, but balloon arrangements bring a bright smile to the receiver. Whether the balloons are a "Happy Birthday" message or an "Over the Hill" reminder of turning 40, you can't help but chuckle when you are presented with a balloon bouquet.

Types

Balloon bouquets can be colorful or monochromatic. They can display a special message or mood, or they can be symbolic. A bouquet can be as simple as one Mylar balloon or a dozen latex balloons. They can arrive with a bouquet of flowers or a teddy bear clinging to a rainbow of colors.

Function

Balloon arrangements are like flowers. They send a message for a special person or occasion, or just a pick-me-up. Companies deliver to the individual's home or work. A message is included, usually on the balloons and on the anchor that supports the balloons. People send balloon arrangements on holidays, birthdays, graduation days and anniversaries.

Features

Balloon bouquets consist of Mylar balloons (shiny foil balloons with printed messages) or latex balloons (regular solid-color balloons). Mylar balloons stay floating for up to two weeks, and latex balloons stay floating for 12 to 24 hours. An anchor weights the balloons; this can be a simple decorative weight, vase of flowers, plant or teddy bear. Typical messages are "Congratulations," "I Love You," "Happy Mother's Day" and "Happy Birthday."

Considerations

First, decide on the anchor. Do you want a standard weight, or you do want to use flowers, plants, a box of chocolates or a stuffed animal? Each company has a number of choices. Second, decide on the message. Most companies have at least 10 to 20 different messages available on Mylar balloons. Then decide on the colors and how many different types of balloons. Hospitals do not allow latex balloons because of possible allergies.

Significance

You can order a balloon bouquet online or by phone. Pricing varies with balloon arrangements. The usual starting price is approximately $25. Balloon arrangements can run as high as $100 depending upon the number of balloons and the type of anchor. Mylar balloons are more expensive, but they float for a longer period.
