FedEx Center Specialist Jobs

A center specialist at FedEx Office, formerly FedEx Kinko's, is an entry-level position at one of the company's many centers that provide shipping, printing, copying and other services. With more than 1500 centers worldwide, many opportunities to work at FedEx are regularly available. Options include full-time and part-time, with tremendous potential for advancement.

  1. Identification

    • A FedEx Office center provides regular and express shipping services, digital printing production, copying service, high-speed Internet access, videoconferencing, photo processing and more. A FedEx center specialist has a wide array of job duties, most involving copying and producing various printed items for customers. The equipment includes large format machines which can handle complex instructions, including digital images and printing, along with color production. Center specialists provide price quotes to customers, take customer orders and schedule and coordinate production, pick-up and delivery. They perform quality control checks and communicate with customers as needed.

    Function

    • FedEx center specialists are responsible for maintaining very high quality and for effectively juggling multiple job duties. They must prevent errors and the expense of having to throw away printed copy. They maintain, clean and repair equipment. More experienced specialists train new employees and direct other members of the production team to perform specific job duties. They do cashiering work and may pick up and deliver orders.

    Features

    • The secondary responsibilities of the FedEx center specialist are to assist in shipping-related services when needed. They provide information to customers about FedEx services and rates, and make suggestions about shipping methods. They weigh packages and affix labels, track all incoming and outgoing packages, prepare parcels for pick-up and sort incoming parcels. When necessary, FedEx center specialists prepare items for shipping including wrapping them in damage-preventing materials and placing into shipping containers.

    Considerations

    • FedEx center specialists must have a high school diploma or equivalent. They need excellent communication skills, and to work efficiently with minimal supervision. As part of a team, they need to cooperate well with co-workers. Center specialist jobs require physical ability to stand for many hours and to do some heavy lifting. The specialists must be very organized and be able to handle times of stress with a great deal of work under deadlines.

    Potential

    • As of 2008, starting hourly wage for FedEx center specialist jobs was about $10, with an increase to about $12 after five years. Some positions are full-time with benefits including health insurance, paid vacations and holidays and a 401(k) plan. Part-time positions are also available for people who prefer fewer than 40 hours a week, often convenient for college students because many FedEx Office centers are located near college campuses. Some centers are open 24 hours a day most days of the year, providing opportunities for flexible scheduling. FedEx Office prefers to promote from within, and with experience, center specialists are encouraged to apply for higher paying positions, such as customer service associate, production coordinator, center assistant manager, among others.
