- Deck railings are used on decks to prevent anyone from falling off. They also are a finishing touch to the deck's appearance. Deck railings are used on all of the edges of decks and consist of several parts. These various parts are securely connected to the deck to create the railing.
- Deck railings are made of posts, panels (such as rungs or balusters) and handrails. The posts are typically larger than the rest of the railing and are connected to the actual deck. They are placed uniformly around the deck. The handrails join each of these posts at the top and usually have another rail that runs across the bottom. The panels are evenly spaced, connect the two rails and are often decorative.
- There are a variety of deck railings produced. (See some examples in the links in Resources below.) You can get numerous types of actual railings created from wood. They are also produced from vinyl, metal and composite that appears as wood. Each of these types is available in many different styles, sizes and shapes. Deck railings are obtainable in precut lengths or can be custom made to fit specific decks or parts of it.
- Deck railings can add architectural beauty to your deck. Vinyl railings do not require a lot of maintenance, which reduces the lifetime cost of them. Wood and metal railings should be inspected and painted as needed. The panels (baluster) of the railings are produced in a large variety of styles to match the décor of your home and deck.
- Consider several things prior to selecting deck railings. You should have a budget or set amount you can afford to spend on them. The costs can vary, which can affect your available choices. Do you want to install them yourself or have a professional do it? What material do you want them to be constructed from? What design or overall look do you want? How much upkeep are you willing to do, and how long do you want the railings to last? If you answer all of these, you can narrow your options of deck railings and find ones that will work.
