About MP3 Samples
MP3's have revolutionized the music industry by making digital music easily accessible with the use of a computer and data connection. E-music sites offer free music samples and full length downloads for a small fee. Users can listen to and purchase music singles without having to buy an entire album of music that they are not interest in.

Identification
-
MP3's are compressed sound files that can be played on iPods and other digital audio devices. The compression process greatly reduces the original file size of an audio segment using the MPEG layer 3 conversion standards. However, the smaller file size does not interfere with or distort sound quality. MP3 samples, or clips, are approximately 30 second digital files that offer the listener a sneak peak of their desired audio file.
History
-
The MP3 file format was created by Karlheinz Brandenburg, a German mathematician, in 1989. Ten years later, the first digital music file was released in MP3 format, sparking wide spread interest in compressed music files and downloadable music. The scaled down version of over-sized digital music files eliminated the need for larger data storage systems; smaller file sizes equaled more available storage space. And the introduction of MP3 sampling made browsing the available online music genres more efficient.

Benefits
-
Free MP3 samples are available through iTunes and other websites that sell digital music files. These downloadable files allow potential buyers the opportunity to test drive the music of a particular artist before making a purchase. Smaller size also opens up the opportunity to utilize MP3 sample clips into different mediums that have limited space. MP3 samples have made their way onto web page blogs, allowing members of social networks the opportunity to express themselves via their favorite audio tunes. Cell phone users can also acquire MP3 music samples to be used as ring tones.
Warning
-
MP3 samples are distributed through a wide range of websites and file sharing programs. Unfortunately, not all of these computerized environments have the artists best interests at heart. Many of the file sharing communities such as, Limewire and Kazaa, provide computer users with the ability to upload and download full MP3's and samples, resulting in copyright violations. Napster, iTunes, and Amazon offer digital music downloads that are in compliance with these laws and have been given permission by the artist to distribute MP3 samples and full albums.
Potential
-
MP3 samples are not only associated with the music industry. Producers of E-books, inspirational audio, news excerpts and pre-recorded radio transmissions, also utilize MP3 samples to promote their work.
