Qualifications to Become a Nurse
Each state has a medical board that oversees the requirements and licensing of practicing nurses in that state. While the language may vary the majority of these requirements are universal. However, registered nurses have more rigorous requirements than licensed practical nurses.
-
Function
-
The general requirements for registered nurses include being at least 18-years-old. Candidates must be of good moral character and be able to pass a background check. Additionally some states, such as New York, require additional training from a state approved provider for identifying and reporting child abuse. In addition to the requirements below, candidates must also complete the application and submit a fee.
Features
-
Licensed practical nurses have fewer general requirements. Candidates must be at least 17-years-old. Background checks are used to verify that applicants are of good moral standing. They must possess a high school diploma or a GED. An application and fee are required to be considered as a licensed practical nurse candidate.

Significance
-
The education requirements for registered nurses includes completing at least a two-year degree with a college accredited by the state. The class work should focus on general nursing knowledge, rather than a nursing specialty. This coursework should include education regarding infection control.
Considerations
-
Licensed practical nurses are also required to have infection control included in their education requirements. To complete the education requirement, nursing students can either complete an accredited nine-month licensed practical nurse training program. Students who passed a two-year general nursing program can also opt to apply as a licensed practical nurse instead of as a registered nurse.
Potential
-
Each state determines the examination to be used for registered nurses and for licensed practical nurses. Many states use the NCLEX-RN and the NCLEX-PN. This is the exam created by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. The NCLEX-RN is for registered nurses and the NCLEX-PN is for practical nurses. The tests are administrated at the Pearson VUE testing centers across America.
