About Sound Drivers

Sound drivers are computer programs that allow sound signals that are received by the computer to be translated into audible sounds that can be played through a speaker. There are several different types of sound drivers, each with different specifications that can range from general purpose use to advanced. Most modern operating systems come with pre-installed sound drivers.

    Function

  1. An audio driver has two functions. The most important function is to communicate with output and input devices, and make sure that sound is transformed into an audible signal that can be interpreted by speakers. The secondary function of audio drivers is to manage sound related input and output devices.
  2. Significance

  3. Audio drivers are a very significant part of a computer's operating system, and often come standard when you buy a new computer with a pre-installed operating system. Drivers are often one of the most overlooked facets of an operating system, but are integral to its overall function.
  4. Types

  5. There are several different types of audio drivers, and most fall into three basic categories: basic, general purpose and advanced. Basic audio drivers are very small and come with no graphical interface or support programs. These programs generally run in your operating system's background, and simply provide sound decryption with no options. General purpose drivers are the most popular, and generally feature a support program and an input and output device manager. General purpose drivers are normally part of a modern computer's operating system, and do not typically need to be downloaded or purchased separately. Advanced drivers normally feature several support and management programs, and are intended for professional musicians or sound technicians. These drivers are usually very expensive, but often are necessary for managing complex audio inputs and outputs.
  6. Size

  7. Driver software is relatively small, with most common drivers registering in at the 20 to 30 MB mark. Some very basic drivers are as small as 1.5 MB, such as the ESS audio driver. However, more advanced drivers can carry a very hefty file size, such as the ASUS Pro Driver, which has an almost 60 MB file size.
  8. Warning

  9. Beware of pirated or unlicensed driver software. Advanced audio drivers can become quite pricey, and some Internet users find it easier to circumvent these high costs by pirating the software for a lower cost. However, the bootlegged software is illegal to download or purchase, and is highly unreliable. It is very important to always buy genuine software and double-check where you buy your software to make sure that it is legitimate.
