About Pipe Fitters
Pipe fitters are responsible for laying out, assembling, installing and maintaining piping systems for heating, cooling, hot water and steam. In addition, the repair of such systems is a large part of the job description. They generally begin the profession in an apprenticeship program, which includes on-the-job experience as well as classroom time, but others receive training at technical schools or community colleges.

Function
-
The installation, maintenance and repair of low and high-pressure pipe systems fall under the job purview of pipe fitters. While pipe fitters have training in working with piping systems used for manufacturing, electricity generation, and heating and cooling, many specialize in one type. Most often, pipe fitters work on large piping systems in which the pipes are made of heavy materials such as iron or steel. Whatever the material, pipe fitters are well versed in reading blueprints and following instructions.
Time Frame
-
Because they are responsible for planning and laying out piping systems, pipe fitters work on projects from their earliest stages. In a new construction situation, for example, pipe fitters need to be involved from the beginning since much of their work takes place before construction is complete. Some pipe fitters also are responsible for producing cost estimates for clients and, as such, are among the first to be involved in projects. Since pipe fitters also are responsible for maintenance and repair, they are involved in projects throughout the construction phase and thereafter, too.

Misconceptions
-
One of the primary misconceptions about pipe fitters is that they are the same thing as plumbers. That is not the case. Whereas plumbers work on water, disposal, and gas systems in homes and other buildings, pipe fitters work pipes for industrial processes, which often are under high pressure. Also, pipe fitters must meet higher training and testing requirements.
Considerations
-
People considering a career as a pipe fitter should consider that the work involves high degrees of precision, an aptitude for machines and tools, and the ability to read and interpret blueprints. While they work in industrial and power plants, their actual work oftentimes is done in close, uncomfortable quarters. There are a number of industries that employ pipe fitters on a full-time basis, but many pipe fitters also work on construction projects that provide temporary employment.
Geography
-
Wherever there are piping systems that need to be built or maintained, there are pipe fitters. While large and medium sized cities often provide the bulk of their ongoing work due to the sheer number of buildings, pipe fitters may live in or travel to smaller cities when there are jobs for them. Additionally, some of the piping systems pipe fitters work on are found in remote areas.
