About HVAC Technicians

HVAC technicians play an important part in everyone's life. Without them there would be no air conditioning or heating. HVAC technicians work in private homes and keep the refrigeration cases in supermarkets working, as well as the refrigeration units in hospitals that keep the blood needed for transfusions fresh. They also install the systems in new buildings.

  1. Features

    • Anyone wishing to become an HVAC needs to get an education beyond high school. There are trade schools and 2 year colleges that have courses that go anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. This is a union job and the unions do have apprenticeships available and getting one of these and passing is the best way to get a foot hold in the field. Apprenticeships are a combination of classroom work and hands on training on actual job sites. Apprenticeships can last for as much as four years. Most schools will have job placement services, and those who complete a union apprenticeship will be able to find a job through the union.

    Function

    • A HVAC needs to be able to do everything relating to heating, air conditioning and ventilation equipment from installation to maintaining all of the components of the unit - motors, compressors, pumps, fans, ducts, pipes, thermostats and switches. Most will work on one type of equipment, either refrigeration or heating, and focus on installing systems in new buildings or repairing existing ones, but they will have the training to work on everything.

    Potential

    • The potential for getting a job and keeping it is very high. HVAC technicians are always in demand. If there is a drop in new construction projects, those who work in this part of the industry will experience layoffs and unemployment. But as long as there are air conditioning and heating systems, there will be a need for HVAC technicians. There is also the potential for earning a very good income. HVAC technicians start out with good pay and with experience, and they can rise to the position of supervisor and make as much as a someone with a full college degree.

    Considerations

    • Becoming an HVAC technician is something to consider for someone who likes to work with tools and solve problems, can follow diagrams and has a lot of patience. . Another thing to consider is the fact that it will take a few years of education before a technician can get a full-time job. There will be times when they will have to be on call 24 hours a day for emergencies. Anyone handling refrigerants must be licensed, so there is a test to pass.

    Significance

    • It is important to look at different options when deciding on a career. There are so many options available, that it is easy to overlook some of the most lucrative and satisfying. Becoming an HVAC technician might not be the right choice for you, but you will never know unless you give it a good look.
