- There are countless different types of parties, and each of them can have specific types of food. For instance, if you are having a party for children, food items should be suited to kids' tastes and made to fit little hands. Celery with peanut butter, mini pizzas and trays of small pieces of fruit are good choices. A taco or pizza bar would be fitting for hosting a gaggle of teenagers. For a theme party, like a luau, serve food matched to the theme, such as pineapple chicken.
- Plan your menu after you make your guest list; this will help you take into consideration any special dietary needs of the people attending your party. This does not mean that just because some of your guests are vegan or are unable to eat foods with gluten, that your entire menu must meet these guidelines. Etiquette, courtesy and concern for your friends, however, should lead you to provide at least one main dish and some side dishes or appetizers that they can enjoy.
- There are so many healthy, delicious recipes and ingredients readily available that there is no reason you cannot serve healthful foods at your party. Use low fat yogurt as the base for any creamy dressings or dips. Replace vegetable oil with either nonstick spray or olive oil. Angel food cake topped with a creamy sorbet or exotic fruits, such as kiwi, star fruit or mango, provide a sophisticated appearance while being incredibly low in fat and calories.
- If you are seeking a way to effectively save time while still providing an array of delicious foods, think about your prep work. Make whatever you can ahead of time. Dishes such as lasagna or chicken Kiev freeze and reheat beautifully, allowing you to make them far in advance. Do not discount prepared packaged foods, such as cheese cubes in the dairy aisle, diced produce and frozen chopped onions and other veggies. These items help you cut corners without sacrificing quality.
- Take into account several factors. For example, is it a sit-down dinner? If so, you can choose several hearty, elegant dishes to pass around. If your gathering is more of a relaxed, mingling affair, choose foods that are portable and not very messy. For instance, mini pizzas and meat or vegetables on skewers are easier to munch standing poolside than chicken parmesan or salad would be. Picture your guests dining at the party and you will be able to make ideal menu choices.
