About Boat Trailer Lights

Boat trailer lights are a useful, necessary part of attaching a boat to a trailer. They fit right on the back of a trailer usually near the wheel wells, or right on the back bumper. They are a safety precaution and used for obvious reasons, because the car's brake lights can't be seen with a boat in the way. Trailer lights come in different shapes and sizes, but they are work on the same principle.

  1. Significance

    • If you did not have boat trailer lights, cars would not know when you are braking. Since your boat also sticks out a little ways from the trailer and is high up off the ground, it could be hard for drivers to tell when the vehicle is trying to stop. It takes a longer time to brake with a boat because there is so much momentum, so having these lights is a priority, as trailers brake more often.

    Function

    • Every time you press the brakes the trailer lights flare up, just like your normal tail lights. This is accomplished by threading a wire connected to the car's tail lights to the trailer hitch. The wires are connected to a female outlet. When the trailer is hooked up, you connect the trailer light wires to this outlet to give power to them.

    Types

    • There are a few leading trailer light manufacturers, including Anderson, Bargman and Wesbar. Each company makes several types of trailer lights including LED and regular bulb trailer likes. Basically any type of truck brake light can be fixed to a trailer. You just need a trailer light kit, and a vehicle to trailer adapter. You can buy these for any kind of truck and trailer.

    Features

    • Trailer lights feature a grommet, which is a rubber gasket the fits around the plastic light, a mounting bracket, hardware and the adapter connections and wiring. They are feature bright bulbs, red plastic shades made of plastic that create a red light and varying degrees of brightness. Some also feature chrome rims and dual color light bars. In addition, they are available in different shapes and configurations. Some are aligned horizontally and are much longer, and these are called ID bars.

    Size

    • Trailer lights are about the size of your fist, anywhere from 4 to 5 inches in diameter. Many of them are round, but a few are square or rectangular. The larger the trailer, the larger the tail lights. They are also available in double configurations which feature two tail lights of similar size right next to each other.
