Xbox Repair FAQs

The Xbox is a popular game console system. With long hours of frequent play it will eventually require some maintenance or repair. How these issues are dealt with requires knowledge of the specific problem.

What can be done, when the screen freezes during game or DVD play? The most common problem is that the Xbox laser is dirty. It can be resolved by using a lens cleaner CD or with delicate cleaning of the lens with a Q-tip and isopropyl alcohol. The second issue, is that the lens is too weak to read any disks. A laser calibration may salvage the laser for few more months, but it will eventually need to be replaced.

The Xbox does not power up. What is wrong? It can be as simple as the power cord. Borrow a friend's power cord to test it and see if the Xbox turns on. If successful, buy a new power cord. If not, the problem is probably the power supply unit. In this case, the part will need to replaced and installed by a technician or savvy individual.

A game/movie is stuck in the Xbox DVD tray. How can this be fixed? The problem can be either with the gear that opens the tray or the DVD drive. Try to get the disk out by using a paper clip in the gap above the eject button in the front of the Xbox. This will hopefully move the tray gear enough for it to gently slide it open. If not successful, the rubber band that connects the motors of the DVD drive to the may be stretched out or broken. The rubber band can be replaced at low cost. However, if the tray is heavily damaged, the DVD drive will need to be replaced.

The Xbox is showing error codes on screen. Can the Xbox be fixed? Microsoft has incorporated these error codes into the Xbox system to help diagnose problems. Some of these errors can be corrected.
