Weight loss camps are designed to help campers lose weight while at camp, but also to be able to control their weight once they get back home. If the camper doesn't learn what to do when he goes home, he will just put the weight back on.

Campers feel comfortable because they are surrounded by individuals who are having the same problems as themselves. Often the camp leaders are individuals who had once been overweight as well.     Types

    • There are two types of weight loss camps. The first type of camp is for children ages seven to 18 who are struggling with their weight. They will learn how to live a healthy life at the same time as their peers. At the same time they will enjoy fun camp activities that will help them bond with their peers, producing new friendships. The second type of camp is for overweight adults. Adults will be able to practice cooking new, healthy recipes for use at home. They will also receive counseling to get to the root problem that has led them to their over eating.

    Time Frame

    • Camps run anywhere from three weeks to nine weeks long. The amount of time you choose for your child or yourself to attend camp should depend on how much weight you have to lose, and how much help you think you need to lose it. You want to make sure that you are away long enough to create good habits. If you are not sure about how much time you will need, you should call the camp admissions officer and she can make a recommendation after talking to you.

    Considerations

    • The costs to join a weight loss camp are much higher than any regular summer camp. You can expect to pay somewhere between $3,000 (for three weeks) and $8,000 (for nine weeks). There isn't usually any financial aid available for these types of camps. Weight loss camps for kids are availale during summer months so that gives you the whole school year to save up.

    Benefits

    • There are several benefits that result from a summer at a weight loss camp. First, the camper gains self esteem. Second, the camper begins to get healthier, and even in some cases is cured of such diseases as diabetes. Third, the camper goes home and teaches his family how to get and stay healthy. Teenagers can be a positive influence on their school mates by sharing what they have learned, and encouraging others.
