What is the Best Financial Investment?

If you ever read the newspaper or surf the Internet, you've undoubtedly seen hundreds of advertisements claiming that they've found the world's greatest investment or some other secret to financial success. However, if choosing the best investment were that easy, everyone would be doing it. Unfortunately, there really is no such thing as the "best investment"--only the investment that is best for you.

  1. Types

    • There are thousands of ways for you to invest your money. Stocks, bonds, mutual funds and CDs are common choices, but you can also invest in real estate, hedge funds, small businesses and more. Each of these investments has a different set of risks and a different potential for returns.

    Identification

    • The deciding factor in choosing an investment should be your comfort level with the risks involved. Every investor wants to make as much money as possible from his or her investments, but not every investor is willing to take big risks. Investments that have big potential payouts (hedge funds, etc.) can be quite risky--there is a very real possibility that you could lose every bit of your investment. Conversely, CDs and other conservative investments are low- or no-risk, but they earn very little interest.

    Size

    • Another factor that an investor must consider when choosing investments is the size of his or her investment. If you have only a small amount to invest, some investments (like mutual funds with large minimum investment requirements) may not be available to you. If you have a very large amount to invest, you may want to choose several investments to diversify your assets.

    Considerations

    • If an investment sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If you come across an investment that guarantees huge returns with little or no risk, be sure to investigate it thoroughly. Pyramid schemes and other such investments are everywhere.

    Warning

    • Unless you are putting your money is something guaranteed (like a CD), make sure you never invest what you can't afford to lose. Also, always research your investments carefully!
