About Dumbwaiters

Despite their amusing name, dumbwaiters are simply elevators that are installed in homes or businesses to facilitate the transport of items between the floors. Whether you're bringing a heavy load of laundry from the basement up to the second floor, or transporting boxes of merchandise in a business, dumbwaiters are an extremely convenient and useful thing to have (and are a much better option than breaking your back carrying heavy things up the stairs). Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Function

    • Residential dumbwaiters can assist in everything from carrying food down to a kitchen to delivering firewood to a living room. Some people even install dumbwaiters in their homes to bring food from the living quarters down to the yard where their dogs are waiting for dinner. Commercial dumbwaiters can be used to deliver medical equipment from the first floor to the top floor of a hospital, or to transport room service up to guests in hotels.

    Types

    • There are a few different types of dumbwaiters. Before you consider getting a dumbwaiter for your home or business, you should think about your options. If you are looking for a dumbwaiter in your home, a small one should suffice. Standard residential dumbwaiters can transport between 50 and a few hundred pounds of weight with ease (up to 500 pounds usually). There are also both manual and electric dumbwaiters. Manual dumbwaiters are less expensive to run, though the electric dumbwaiters are far easier to operate as they only require the simple push of a button!

    Considerations

    • You'll also have to consider whether you're going to install the dumbwaiter into an existing part of your building or home, or whether you're going to build it inside of a new construction. The latter option is easier, but more expensive too. To put a dumbwaiter into a pre-existing structure, you will have to insert shafts.

    Expert Insight

    • Based on the layout of your business or home, you should discuss your options with an experienced contractor to find out what type of model you'll need (whether residential or commercial, manual or electric) and whether you should make a new construction entirely for the dumbwaiter or try to place it into an existing part of the building (to do this, you will have to make sure that your starting point and destination locations within your house or building are directly above and below each other).

    Theories/Speculation

    • If you are looking to acquire a dumbwaiter for your home or business, there are a lot of different designs and models available on the Internet. Some businesses online will even customize a dumbwaiter for your purposes. Some places to check out include Elevation Innovation Inc, Summit Lifts Inc, Powerlift Dumbwaiters Corp, Nationwide Lifts, Waupaca Elevator Company Inc, AmeriGlide Express Dumbwaiters and many others.
