- Flat screen televisions were first envisioned by scientists at the University of Illinois in 1964; however, it took more than 20 years before this invention became available in stores. The technology to provide flat screen televisions is the same technology that allowed flat screen computer monitors and laptops to be produced. In 1998, the first flat screen televisions were available for commercial purchase. These sets sold for more than $8,000.
- The two main types of flat screen televisions are liquid crystal display (LCD) and plasma. LCD TVs use liquid crystals with a light source behind them. These TVs are more energy efficient than plasma TVs; however, the time it takes images to change can be longer. Plasma TVs use two glass panels with pixels in between. An electric current creates the light needed to create images. Plasma TVs have had problems with "burn-in" when the same picture is allowed to sit for long periods of time, though this is not as much of a problem in newer models.
- There are many benefits of flat screen TVs over tube televisions. First, they are lighter and require less space. If the individual chooses, they can be mounted to the wall to free up even more space. Second, the displays on these televisions are crisp and precise. The technology inside these TVs allows the picture to be highly accurate and clearer than on old sets. Third, the flat screen allows images to remain focused. Televisions with a rounded screen often distort images, since lines cannot appear straight.
- It is important to consider which type of flat screen TV is best for you before you begin shopping. Most manufacturers produce both types. Plasma TVs are good for rooms that do not get a lot of outdoor lighting, since they are prone to glare. They are also especially good for individuals looking for a TV that will have deep colors, especially blacks and other dark hues. LCDs should be considered for individuals who play a lot of video games, since the static images will not burn in. They are also the only option if you are looking for a screen smaller than 40 inches.
- There are some disadvantages to owning a flat screen television. First, they are more expensive than a tube TV of equal size and typically require a substantial financial investment. Second, the picture produced by flat screen TVs is often not as good as those on an tube television of equivalent quality. Flat screens are more prone to interruption and distortion caused by cable and satellite providers and do not have the same richness of color.
