About DC Motor Theory

DC motors use two terminals separated in the middle by a magnetic shaft. When the voltage is run across the middle shaft, the magnetic pressure causes the chambers to turn. There are two kinds of DC motors, stepper motors and servo motors. DC motors are used to cause vibrations in certain objects, such as the vibrating function on most cell phones. DC motors are often also used in science projects because they are one of the simplest motors to make.

  1. Identification

    • Each DC motor contains two separate terminals with a magnetized center between them. There are two main parts, the stator and the rotor. The stator contains parts such as brushes, magnets and housing for the whole motor. The rotor contains the windings, the communicator and the output shaft. The two parts work together when voltage is applied to create a moving motor.

    Features

    • Stepper motors work on a pulse basis. When the motor is electrified, it sends out a small pulse rather than a turn. Stepper motors are commonly used in disk drive positioning for the disk heads.
Servo DC motors are designed to provide an angling effect, and are often used to control the torque on remote-controlled airplanes or radio-powered helicopters.

    Function

    • The main function of a DC motor is to provide a small motor that will propel a small item in some way. They are commonly used in remote-controlled vehicles, cell phones, computers and many other applications. DC motors are one of the cleanest motors around, producing very few polluting chemicals. They can also be made in extremely small sizes, which makes them perfect for many household applications.

    Effects

    • There are many different effects that a DC motor can produce. One of the most common effects is propulsion; another is its ability to control very small components, such as in the remote-controlled airplanes mentioned above. Cell phones and computers can be made extremely small because of DC motors.

    Expert Insight

    • DC motors are some of the most common motors used besides the internal combustion motor. It is possible to make one very easily from a battery and a few other tools. Moving something by using a DC motor makes for a great science project (see Resources below).
