What is a Wheel Chair Stair Lift?
All medical devices--before they can be marketed in the United States--must be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This includes not only wheelchairs (whether they are manual or battery powered) but wheelchair stair lifts as well. Wheelchair stair lifts can be a necessary aid to those that are confined to any type of wheelchair and live in a multi-story home or building.

Function
-
Wheelchair stair lifts provide mobility to the user of a wheelchair for gaining access in multi-level buildings and homes. These devices are generally an add on feature to existing buildings. They are usually bolted to the wall framing of a stairwell and powered by a dedicated circuit in the power distribution panel. In public buildings, the power system for the lift is also tied to any emergency generator. This allows the lift to operate when the electrical power grid is down.
Types
-
Stair lifts come in a variety of styles and types. The most common is a rack and pinion gear drive. The rack gear is mounted to the wall of the stairwell. A guide track is then attached to the gear rack that guides the rider's platform. The electric drive motor is connected to the platform with a control box. This controller allows the rider to operate the system from the platform. Another lift system is like a mini-elevator in which the rider is enclosed in a small transport box and is vertically lifted between floors. These type of units fit easily into an existing lower floor closet space. Like commercial elevators, these type of lifts can only be installed by certified professionals. However, the track mounted stair lifts can be installed by the homeowner.

Size
-
Wheelchair stair lifts are made for one rider at a time. The track and gear system usually do not take up much if any room along the inside wall to which they are mounted. The track is generally topped off with a handrail to be used by pedestrian traffic on the stairwell. The riders platform can be flipped up to a non-operation position when not in use. This allows full access of the stair area by pedestrian traffic.
Considerations
-
Proper installation of the track to the stairwell wall should be the greatest of all considerations before purchasing such a system. The stud wall framing must be strong enough for the track mounting. Power requirements must also be calculated, as the small gear motor may need its own dedicated circuit for proper power to the electric motor and controls. Extra lighting may also have to be installed for the rider so it can properly operated. Be sure that the device is not only FDA approved but the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) label is listed as well.
Benefits
-
The installation of a wheelchair lift for those confined, can mean a freedom that most of us takes for granted. These simple devices can encourage independence for most wheelchair users. The cost effectiveness of these devices can be the difference of having to sell a home due to lack of access. The installation of ramps, widening of doorways and a wheelchair lift are a small price for the complete access to one's home.
