The first Super 8 motel was opened by Dennis Brown in 1974 in South Dakota. The name evolved from the price of the original room rate of $8.88. Over the years, the Super 8 motels have added amenities to entice budget-conscious travelers to lodge with them, such as pools, meeting areas and conference rooms. A frequent traveler club emerged in 1976 and currently features more than 7 million participants.

After the first Super 8 motel opened its doors, it only took six years for more than 70 motels to be up and running. By 1984, just one decade after the first, there were 245 Super 8 motels in operation. Another decade later, in 2004, there were more than 2,100 Super 8 motels. As of 2008, the number of Super 8 motels worldwide is more than 2,500.

All Super 8 motels offer basic amenities that include high-speed Internet, continental breakfast and a lounge or lobby area. Some Super 8 motels feature an indoor or outdoor swimming pool, conference rooms and a fitness room. Large Super 8 motels, called lodges, usually include a restaurant on the property.

The Super 8 motel chains are quite prevalent throughout the United States, with a Super 8 franchise in 49 of the 50 states (there's none in Hawaii). The states with the most Super 8 motels are Texas, Illinois and California, with Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin and Georgia close behind. There are some franchises in select international locations, such as those in Dalian, China or Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada.

As a promotional event, Super 8 motels reverted back to the original room rate of $8.88 for one week, beginning on August, 8, 2008, at 8:00 p.m. The first 800 people that made a reservation online each night during the promo week received that incredible rate.
