About Federal Grants for Starting a New Business

New business federal grants are monies awarded by the government that provide financial assistance for aspiring new business owners and their associates to start their own companies. Federal grants typically do not have to be paid back and once the business begins to earn revenue, the money can go directly back into the business rather than having to pay off a loan through a financial lender.

    Significance

  1. New business federal grants give businesses the opportunity to open its doors and start a business with little to no money down out of its own pocket. Business federal grants aid new businesses that fall within such industries as manufacturing, mining, trade, retail, construction and agriculture. Grants are funded based on monies that are currently available to the government and have not yet been exhausted.
  2. Function

  3. New business federal grants help entrepreneurs launch businesses such as a nonprofit animal shelter, a restaurant, clothing store, thrift shop, vegetable farm, public television station, construction company, after school tutoring program or a hair salon. Federal grants often cater to disadvantaged adults, people living on an Indian reservation, minorities and women, although everyone is free to apply for a government grant. Many government grants are geared toward funding a business that can make a difference in the community or aid in rebuilding an area in despair.
  4. Features

  5. Registering on grants.gov is the first step in the application process (see Resources). The site features easy registration, an informative search engine for finding grants available and a personal user name and password. A grant proposal letter should also be administered along with the application to clarify reasons for applying as well as long term proposed solutions that could be resolved with the funding assistance of a business grant.
  6. Considerations

  7. Many grants offered by the government require the business to meet certain criteria before becoming eligible. Some requirements are that the business be non-profit, have a minimum amount of employees and hold a valid business license in certain categories such as agriculture, retail or the food industry. When applying, you should consider that a decision to award the grant can take up to 6 months and an additional 3 months later for the funding to be distributed. Keep in mind that the grant application process can be lengthy and often disappointing if funds are depleted by the time the application is finally approved.
  8. Effects

  9. The effects of applying and being approved for a new business federal grant will result in being able to have access to funds that will make starting a business easier. A solid business plan must first be established in order be able to present an acceptable application to the federal government and have it be approved. A grant writer who specializes in dealing exclusively with writing grants is the best candidate for completing the project. Successful businesses can bring in millions of dollars of earned revenue when business plans are developed and implemented precisely.
