About Wicca High Priestesses

To reach the rank of High Priestess is an honor in any coven. The role of the High Priestess is a multifaceted one. It involves more than just leading her coven in rituals, although that is part of it. Being a High Priestess is more than just a document claiming that title. It is something that comes from so deep within that it mentally, spiritually and physically becomes a part of her. She is the representation of the Goddess on earth.

  1. Significance

    • In the tarot deck, the High Priestess card is the card of knowledge. This also represents the role of High Priestess in a coven. A High Priestess is the leader of her coven. She is usually chosen by the members of her coven, although each coven has their own practices, and is usually a senior member. She will be someone the other members respect and look up to.

    Function

    • To be a High Priestess involves a great many responsibilities. It is more than a role or a title, it is a way of life. She is responsible for the learning and direction of her coven. She serves as counsel and offers guidance to every member as needed. She must resolve conflicts within the coven in a fair manner. She must recognize and follow the religious observances in a manner that is acceptable to true Wiccan tradition. She is a leader and a facilitator and she must lead her coven by example. Dedication to her craft is an absolute must in becoming a High Priestess.

    Time Frame

    • To become a true High Priestess, it takes many years of study and learning. How much time will vary depending on the needs and requirements of each coven. While some covens choose their High Priestesses, others may come into the position through succession from a direct link from a previous High Priestess.

    Benefits

    • Being a High Priestess offers a number of benefits and rewards. Most of these benefits come in the spiritual sense. A High Priestess is the keeper of knowledge and wisdom. She can find a balance in her role that is also offered in her daily life. She is at peace with herself and offers this comfort to others. She is offered respect and admiration because she has earned it.

    Misconceptions

    • With the role of High Priestess in the Wicca religion come misconceptions. Perhaps the most common misconception is that Wicca followers are Satan worshippers. This is not true. Not only do they not worship Satan, but they also do not believe in the devil in any way. The devil is a Christian concept and has no place in Wicca beliefs. Another misconception is that a High Priestess and her followers always perform the rituals naked, or skyclad. While this may at times be true and is an option, it is not a requirement. In fact, if you were to ask most Wicca followers, they would probably tell you that most, if not all, of their rituals are practiced fully clothed.
