What Is Novo-Domperidone?

Many people suffer from gastritis and acid reflux. Some stomach ailments are mild, so antacids or other over-the-counter remedies work fine. For those who live with constant ailments, it can be difficult never knowing when you will have problems. There are medications for those who suffer with digestive problems and the side effects of Parkinson's disease medication. However, the Federal Drug Administration warns against the use of domperidone.

  1. Identification

    • Novo-Domperidone is the brand name for domperidone. It is not available in the United States, but Canada provides the medication. Doctors prescribe domperidone to stop nausea and vomiting, as well as to reduce acid reflux, aid patients with gastritis and help the stomach empty faster.

    Function

    • Novo-Domperidone increases the contractions in the stomach and the bowels. It comes in a tablet form. The usual dosage is 10 milligrams, 15 to 30 minutes before a meal, three to four times a day. In Parkinson patients and those with nausea, the dosage may be 20 milligrams.

    Warning

    • Novo-Domperidone is not advisable for pregnant women or those who breast feed, or people experiencing stomach bleeding or problems with their stomach lining. Those with liver problems or who are allergic to domperidone or the ingredients used in the making of the medication are also advised against using it. The FDA believes that such health issues justify removing all brands related to domperidone off the market.

    Effects

    • The medication can cause lactation, dry mouth, headaches, hives, hot flashes, skin irritations and eye swelling. Doctors monitor the use of this drug with regular office visits. They also emphasize the importance of taking the drug exactly as prescribed.

    Considerations

    • Children should not take Novo-Domperidone. It also may interact with certain drugs, so it is imperative that your doctor has your complete medical history. Rare side effects include irregular heartbeat or palpitations, loss of balance, loss of muscle control, difficulty speaking and dizziness.
