What Is an Alternative Learning Center?

Alternative learning centers offer students a non-traditional setting with innovative teaching and learning methods. Some alternative learning centers are certified by national educational organizations, while others are affiliated with local public schools. For students who want or need a change from public school, an alternative school just might be the answer.

  1. History

    • Alternative learning includes any educational method outside the public school system, and while private schools have catered to the children of financially stable parents since the 1800s, during the late 1960s, the demand for alternative schooling increased dramatically. Independent schools appeared, such as Montessori and Waldorf schools, followed by magnet schools and charter schools, each designed to offer the students and parents an alternative to a public education.

    Function

    • Alternative learning centers can get certified through the National Coalition of Alternative Community Schools (NCACS) or the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation (CITA). Charter schools provide a place where students can earn their high school diplomas while working part time. The community often subsidizes magnet schools, and students attend on a lottery basis. Increasingly, franchise schools such as Sylvan Learning Centers offer supplemental tutoring to children enrolled in public or private schools (see Resources below).

    Benefits

    • For a student that does not fit the public school mold, community-run, alternative learning centers can be an effective way to ensure that he graduates from high school. However, there are other reasons for enrolling a child in an alternative school. Religious affiliation, parental philosophy and political reasons prompt some parents to seek an education for their child that suits their own beliefs. In addition, for students with behavioral problems, military-type schools offer discipline in addition to an education.

    Geography

    • Some students can attend alternative learning centers close to home through satellite schools, which offer parents an opportunity to take part in their child's education while following a prescribed curriculum. These schools often operate under the direction of the local school board. Umbrella schools assist homeschooled students in complying with their state's educational requirements, helping them schedule assessment testing and providing assistance with transcript records (see Resources below).

    Considerations

    • All states require private schools, and often homeschools, to register with the State Board of Education. In most states, funding for an alternative education is up to the parents, although private scholarships may be available, and alternative centers for high-risk students may operate under the funding umbrella of the state (see Resources below).

    Prevention/Solution

    • Parents must research an alternative learning center before enrolling their child. Ask about accreditation and whether the courses taken at the center will transfer to a public school or count towards the transcript required for the child to enter college. If you have any doubts, contact a large universities in your area and ask about their requirements for a student coming from an alternative learning center.
