What Is Glytone?

Glytone is a large line of skin-care products from Genesis Pharmaceutical. Glytone products use glycolic acid to slough away the upper layer of old and dead skin cells, and rejuvenate skin. The products are only available through a dermatologist or other physician. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Identification

    • The Glytone Skin Rejuvenation System offers an at-home regimen consisting of three main components: a cleanser to be used twice daily, an exfoliator for overnight use, and a moisturizer to be applied in the morning. Each component is available in three varying strengths of glycolic acid, from 4 to 20 percent, and systems are formulated for the skin types dry, oily, normal and sensitive. The Rejuvenation System items and many other Glytone products are designed to eliminate skin roughness, fine lines and wrinkles, and blemishes and discolorations.

    Function

    • Glycolic acid is a naturally-occurring fruit acid, or alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), derived from sugarcane. AHAs have been shown to be effective in skin renewal, allowing dead skin cells to be removed from the surface, and stimulating new growth of skin and collagen.

    Considerations

    • Dermatologists typically recommend enhancing the results with in-office glycolic peels at regular intervals. During the peels, a more intense glycolic acid solution is applied for a brief time. Over the next few days, several outer layers of skin will dry up and peel off gradually, allowing a new layer of smooth, soft skin to appear. Peels typically have 30 percent glycolic acid, but some have higher concentrations. Clients should be cautious because glycolic acid is a strong substance. Concentrations of 70 percent are used industrially for rust and grease removal.

    Features

    • Glytone also offers a multitude of other products, such as face creams, acne treatment, gel washes, clarifiers to improve sun-damaged skin, sunscreens, shaving cream, nail and cuticle cream, heel and elbow cream, and firming eye gel. The acne treatment kit contains three components. First, a cleansing gel adjusts skin pH and helps rid skin of dead cells. There also is a medicated toner containing salicylic acid, an effective acne eliminator which also helps remove excess oil. The third kit item is a 10 percent benzoyl peroxide gel, which is the maximum strength for over-the-counter sales.

    Warning

    • Almost all online reviews are excellent or 5-star (see Resources), with a smattering of reviews stating no effect was seen or only minor results achieved. However, glycolic acid facial peels have been linked to rosacea--long-lasting and intense redness.
