Running Events in Las Vegas

As with any large city, Las Vegas has attracted the attention of many running societies and events. Most of these events are sponsored by the city's running societies and clubs, many of which hold weekly or daily training practices. Even though they mostly consist of local residents, these clubs want to include anyone who shares a passion for running. Therefore, they are very inviting to tourists, business travelers and any other temporary residents who want to participate in their practices and running events.

  1. Features

    • Las Vegas' flat, vast landscape makes its ideal for runners. Aside from the Strip, which is heavily populated, there are numerous places for people to host a running event. There is the Red Rock Canyon National Park, Red Rock loop, Squires Park, the Las Vegas Golf Course, Sunset Park, the paved running path outside of the Hilton Hotel, and the Lazy River Jogging Track between the Mandalay Bay Resort and the Luxor.

    Warning

    • The summer months can wield unbearable heat in Las Vegas, making it difficult to run outside. Because of this, nearly all of the running events held in the city are held in cooler months. The running season kicks off around October and extends until March or April. You should use extreme caution. Be sure to stay hydrated if you're planning to attend any running event, especially any held in the warmer months.

    Types

    • Most of Las Vegas' running events are affiliated with the city's main running clubs, the Las Vegas Running Team and the Las Vegas Track Club. The Las Vegas Running Team promotes friendship and fitness among Las Vegas residents through its organization of running events. It offers training practices every week night and every Sunday morning.

The Las Vegas Track Club is aimed more at the youthful demographic and promotes the local high school's cross country and track teams. They support many of these schools' events, and when no running events are scheduled, mostly when school is out of session, the club holds its own running events. Though all runners are welcome to participate in their races, the Las Vegas Track Club divides up runners by sex and age. Some of the smaller or surrounding-area running clubs include the Las Vegas Marathon 21 Club, Nevada USATF (Track and Field) Clubs, Las Vegas Heat Youth, Las Vegas Hash House Harriers, and the Southern Nevada Team in Training.

    Time Frame

    • Many running events in Las Vegas are based off of certain times of the year, mostly around the holidays and cooler weather patterns. The Las Vegas Running Team hosts the Turkey Trot, Catch the Gobbler, Come Run with Santa, New Years Day Run, the Dream Run, President's Day Run, Come Catch a Leprechaun, and Come Run in the Sun. The Las Vegas Track Club also has seasonal runs, such as the Great Santa Run, Christmas Can Cure Run, Aloha in December, President's Day Run and Mardi Gras Masquerade Run.

    Considerations

    • In addition to holiday-themed runs, Las Vegas also hosts a marathon that occurs in December. It begins at the Mandalay Bay resorts, takes you through the Strip, down Fremont Street in Downtown Las Vegas and loops back to Mandalay Bay. There is also a half marathon and a children's marathon.

There is also the Defeat "IT" 5K run in April. This one coincides with the local D.A.R.E. program in schools and is dedicated to fighting drug and alcohol abuse. There are many runs that also occur in nearby cities and throughout the State of Nevada. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure occurs at the University of Nevada, Reno, the World Of Hurt Ultra Trail Race and Trail Fun Run in Boulder City, and the Valley of Fire Marathon in Fire State Park State.
