How Star Ratings are Given to Hotels in the U.K.

Prior to 2006, hotels in the U.K. lacked a standard rating system. The grading system varied from one country to the next, which made it difficult for travelers to compare hotels. In order to eliminate this confusion, Visit Britain, Visit Wales, Visit Scotland and the AAA worked together to create a standardized rating system that will simplify the process of selecting appropriate accommodation.

  1. Types

    • There are two types of rating systems: the star system and the diamond system. The star system is the most commonly used of the two worldwide. The AAA created the diamond rating system and it is used by its various establishments as well as in its guidebooks.
For both systems, the more stars or diamonds a hotel receives, the more luxurious it is. Rating begins at 1 star or 1 diamond and goes up to 5 stars or 5 diamonds. A few hotels claim a 6-star rating, but experts believe that this is purely for promotional purposes.

    Identification

    • U.K. hotels are graded on cleanliness, comfort, facilities and space. Every establishment graded by assessors is required to offer quality services, but higher rating levels mean more luxuries for the guests (see Resources below).
      1-star establishments offer acceptable quality.
2-star establishments are usually privately owned and small.
3-star hotels are generally larger, offer more services, and are more formal.
4-star hotels offer a wide range of high quality services and facilities.
5-star hotels are considered among the best worldwide. The services and facilities are luxurious.

    Geography

    • The new standardized rating system is applicable to hotels in Britain, Wales and Scotland. Northern Ireland operates an independent system. The country rates hotels on its own system, in which hotels can receive 1 to 5 stars while guesthouses can receive up to 4 stars. Bed and breakfast accommodations do not receive ratings. Travelers who want information on the quality of a particular bed and breakfast have to rely on the information given on its website or brochure.

    Effects

    • Although a standardized rating system is beneficial to tourists, some hotels will suffer adverse effects. Due to the strict requirements of the grading system, certain establishments cannot be referred to as hotels. Without this designation, they will get lost in the Internet search engines. Also, establishments that decide not to participate in the new rating system will not be listed in the guidebooks. However, they are worth considering because of the possibility that the quality of their services is comparable to hotels with high star ratings.

    Time Frame

    • Although the new system became effective in 2008, it will take several years before the transition is complete. Most establishments are awaiting evaluation, and Visit Britain expects this to happen in a few years. Many of the tourist websites do not yet reflect the changes and still contain links to old information and the old rating system. Travelers may have to wait a few years to experience the full benefits of the rating system.
