Daiquiris are a family of cocktails made by blending three key ingredients: liquor – most commonly, rum – a citrus-based juice for acidity and a sweetener like sugar. The ingredients can be blended with ice to make a frozen, slushie-like drink or served on the rocks.

Daiquiri History

The daiquiri, named after Daiquiri, the mining town where it originated, was invented in the late 1800s in a small town located at the southeastern point of the island of Cuba. Initially not intended as a celebratory cocktail, the daiquiri's two key ingredients, rum and lime juice, were instead used by mine workers to fight off a deadly bout of yellow fever that had invaded the region. After experiencing immense popularity in Havana, the popular cocktail made its way to American shores by way of Washington, D.C. in 1908. And, the rest is history. Today many versions of this simple cocktail exist and annually surge in popularity as temperatures rise.

Pour the mixture into a rocks glass and garnish with a sliced strawberry before serving chilled.

To give your virgin strawberry daiquiri drink more depth, consider adding rum extract, which is nonalcoholic. If that’s not available, you can always substitute a lemon-lime soda for some added fizz.
