- Fall fashions can easily be picked out by their material and color. Thicker fabrics such as wool, corduroy, heavy cotton and knits comprise the most common fall clothes. Hues can be colorful, but not as bright as those found in the spring or summer seasons. Rather than bright red, one will find rust; instead of aqua, a deep teal; sunshine yellow is replaced by a warm gold. Browns, blacks and grays also abound in the autumn.
- Trends for every season come and go, but certain fall staples will always be in style. These include a stylish blazer, thick yet tapered sweaters, subtle plaid skirts and pants, wool tights, boots of every style, leather, suede or denim jackets, a lightweight trench and long, tapered scarves.
- Fall fashions get their kicks like any season's fashions: by the accessories. Soft leather satchels and messenger bags are always a stylish addition, as are a pair of suede or leather lightweight gloves for those chilly evenings. Jewelry should compliment the season's colors, with their own deep ruby, emerald or golden hues or a thick, contrasting silver. Fall jewelry looks best if it's chunky, clunky and can stand out against the thicker materials. Some fall jewelry even mimics the nature, created to resemble fall leaves or acorns.
- Fall fashions have come a long way from the days when folks were told not to wear white after Labor Day. Winter whites, in wools, thick linen and thickly knitted acrylics, keep people cozy well into spring. It's also a myth that sundresses and other summer wear have to be packed away for the season. A smashing floral sundress has become acceptable fall wear with a big, snuggly sweater and thick pair of tights.
- Some summer wear should not be carried over into the fall season. Anything with tropical prints that resembles a sarong should stay put in hotter weather. Sandals, even open-toed ones, are now being worn with tights, but folks should steer clear of those with very thin straps. Some summer wear that should definitely not extend into the fall season includes anything made of wicker or straw or that remotely resembles a flip flop.
