Function
-
Beginner drum lessons will show you how to play simple beats on a snare drum. Your teacher will work on your hand positioning and show you how to grasp the drumsticks so they perform properly, then teach you a few basic beats. You will learn how to count the beat, keep time and then eventually how to play off beats, use pauses and more.
Types
-
There are a few types of beginner drum lessons. Depending on what type of music you are interested in, you can take jazz drum lessons, rock drum lessons or big band drum lessons. In each lesson you will learn the fundamentals of each type of music for the drums. Jazz drum lessons will concentrate on jazz beats and introduce you to the types of drums used in jazz like the tom toms, snare and cymbals. Rock lessons will focus on typical rock beats in four-four time, and introduce you to similar drum instruments. Big band drum lessons will also introduce you to reading sheet music.

Time Frame
-
Beginner drum lessons can be taken once or twice a week and they can last for as long as a few months. Typically, you will learn most of the foundation techniques in as little as three weeks. From there, you can continue to build on your skills and, depending on how fast you progress, advance to intermediate and expert lessons.
Considerations
-
If you want to take beginner drum lessons you first need to find out if you need to provide your own equipment. Some instructors will have basic instruments like a snare, high hat and cymbal that you can use, but ask first. Then decide how often you want to take lessons. If you have time to practice on your own during the week you should take them twice a week to keep adding to your skills. Also, consider how knowledgeable the instructor is and check her credentials before you start.
Expert Insight

There are drum books and audio tapes that you can buy to teach yourself the drums at home without taking lessons. This doesn't replace having a live instructor but it might be a good idea if you want to start off slow. In addition, there are online drum lesson course you can take.
