- Transgender chat rooms provide a safe haven for their members. Usually, these sites include forums that serve as more than just a spot for people to meet up for casual or serious dating. They also provide a way for this historically disenfranchised group to meet, interact and discuss pertinent issues in a secure atmosphere.
- Some sites have supportive moderators who reach out to those transgendered people who might be depressed, troubled or suicidal. Sometimes, other groups like cross-dressers are welcomed as well. Families and friends can in some cases also find information on these sites as well.
- Join a forum that best suits your needs. In addition to love, dating and interacting with those who have transitioned (or are considering transitioning), there are a plethora of forums that offer help for survivors of sexual abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, eating disorders, hate crimes and other issues particular to the transgender community.
- There are many misconceptions about transgendered people. Perhaps the most popular is that they are simply gay. Most transgenders believe that they were born the wrong sex, and the act of (re)creating the essential self is one the person takes on himself. Although societies are around the world are becoming more open-minded, many still do not understand this idea.
- Avoid giving out your home address, telephone number or any personal information too readily on these sites. Sometimes, it is safer just to chat without revealing too much about yourself. Also, note that going into the chat rooms just to harass the others there is strictly prohibited. Most states have laws that will prosecute such behavior as hate crimes.
