About Naples
Naples, Italy, is situated on the sea at the midpoint of two volcanic regions. They are the Phlegraean Fields and the Mount Vesuvius volcano. Naples has the second-largest population in Italy and also one of the biggest in Europe. It is a welcoming city to visitors and home to a variety of cultures existing alongside each other. Naples is a popular vacation destination for tourist around the world.

History

Greeks occupied the Naples region in seventh century BC, but the Romans took it from them. It was captured after the decline of the Western Roman Empire, but again was taken by the Eastern, or Byzantine, Roman Empire in 536. After many battles, it became part of the Kingdom of Sicily, which was ruled by the Norman Kingdom around 1137. Naples separated from Sicily in 1485 and was ruled by France in 1501. The Spanish ruled it for a brief period around 1714. The cities of Naples and Sicily joined to create the Two Sicilys in 1815. Naples was included in the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. In 1943, it was the first Italian city to free itself from German occupation.

Naples is a group of thirty "quarters" or neighborhoods that are governed by ten district boards. The island of Ischia, Capri and Procida, borders it. Naples is located on the south section of Italy in the Campania region. It is a little over forty-five square miles in size and has a mild Mediterranean climate. This includes warm, dry summers and calm, damp winters.
