    1. History

      • Ice tongs were used to easily transport ice for iceboxes by both deliverymen and homeowners. The ice box was a standard piece of kitchen equipment from the mid-19th century to the 1930s when the modern refrigerator came into use. Ice was delivered to homes on a scheduled basis first by horse cart and later by truck. The sight of the iceman and ice tongs was familiar for decades.

As iceboxes became obsolete and disappeared, so did the ice tongs. However, antique ice tongs gained popularity as a decorating item for country motifs, especially in kitchens, in the 1990s, and they are popular today for conversation pieces and decorative items.

      Function

      • Ice tongs' original function was simple. The two curved tines were sharp on one end and connected at the other end. The sharpened ends were opened and fit on either side of the block of ice. As the ice tongs were lifted, the weight of the ice pulled the ends in tighter, and the block could be securely lifted.

      Types

      • There are two basic types of antique ice tongs but both work on the same principle. The most common type connects the tines with short chains attached to a handle. The second type has a scissor-like shape. The chain-and-handle design will hang flat against a wall while the scissor type looks good hanging from a shelf or ceiling. Consider the type that you want for your decorating depending on function and aesthetics.

      Features

      • As contemporary decorative items, ice tongs can be grouped with other antique tools as an attractive wall decoration. Or for a more functional purpose, antique ice tongs can be used as paper towel holders or firewood lifters. Antique ice tongs can also be modified to hold signs or other items.

      Considerations

      • Antique ice tongs can be commonly found at flea markets, auctions, yard sales and antique stores as well as online. The price is generally low: depending on condition, between $10 and $50. If you plan to use antique ice tongs as a functional item, make sure that it is in good shape and the chain and handle is not corroded. If the condition of your antique ice tongs is poor, it will still make an attractive wall decoration that will enhance your rustic or country decor.
