- Chalkboard pens are a new way to write on a chalkboard. They are sometimes called "liquid chalk" or "chalkboard markers." A chalkboard pen works like the old-fashioned metallic markers in that the user has to push down on the tip first to release the ink. Some deli and cafe workers use these markers to create brighter, more dramatic messages for daily special signs.
- They are available in bright neon, earthy tones and primary colors. Once the ink is flowing, the pen writes just like a marker. They come with tight-fitting pen caps to keep the ink from drying out.
- The writing of chalkboard pens lasts longer without fading, and it rarely smudges when touched. The colors are bright, and the pen-style makes writing on chalkboards much easier. In addition, the pens have no chalk dust to irritate allergies or dry out skin, and they eliminate the need for dusty erasers. When you are ready to erase, simply wet a towel and wipe it away.
-
Some users have reported trouble erasing chalkboard pen from certain chalkboards. Make sure you can use water to clean your chalkboard before using the chalkboard pens. Also be sure to always cap your pens when you are not using them--otherwise, they will dry out.
Chalkboard pens are much more expensive than colored or white chalk, but they do last if capped properly. - Several different brands of chalkboard pen are available: Neochalk by Neoplex offers a set of 8 standard-colored liquid chalk markers for about $24, and a set of 5 earth-tone markers for about $16; Liquid Chalk sells a set of 8 earthy colors for $36; a 6-color set of chalk markers is available from EK Success for about $17; Chalkworks chalk markers by Cadaco offer 4 fluorescent colors for about $9 (see Resources below).
