Creating a party theme can help streamline the party planning process. Consider the time of the year, special events, interests, hobbies and other ideas when selecting a party theme.

    History

  1. Has there been a special event in your child's life this past year? Why not celebrate that occasion in your party theme choice? For example, a graduation party could include cap and gown decorations; graduation music; and colors reflecting the school colors. Or if a child did well in sports, or joined a hobby club at school, select a theme that reflects those interests.
  2. Significance

  3. What does your child enjoy doing? These activities are likely a significant part of his life, so the party should reflect that. Common interests, hobbies and sports include: music, choir, baseball, basketball, drama, animals, dance and more. Selecting your party theme based on what your child enjoys will make her feel special and the center of attention.
  4. Size

  5. The size of the party will also help determine the theme you choose so take note of how many children RSVP. Two or three close friends might not have as much fun at the roller skating rink as a group of a dozen or more would. On the other hand, a party where crafts will be made, like dyeing eggs or Build-a-Bear, can be too costly with many children in attendance.
  6. Considerations

  7. Another consideration when choosing the party theme is the age of your attendees. Small children enjoy colorful themes centered on favorite cartoon characters such as Dora and Diego; Cars; Barbi; prince or princess themes and more. Older children might enjoy a craft or action party such as a "murder mystery"; candle-making; cupcake decorating or other fun themed party.
  8. Geography

  9. Try selecting a party theme based on geographical location or cultural heritage. A Mexican party can include pinatas and cinnamon churros. Or try creating a party around a Chinese, Grecian, Spanish or Italian theme--almost any exotic location can be inspiration for party planning.
  10. Time Frame

  11. Snow themes are fun for winter parties.
Snow themes are fun for winter parties.
Is there a major (or minor) holiday near your party? Is the season particularly lovely outside? Plan your party theme around these time considerations. A winter party can have a lovely snow theme with games out in the snow and warm, nourishing foods inside. Spring parties could include gardening, Easter and baby animal themes. Summer parties are nice with water activities, sun or vacation themes. Fall is a season with lots of craft possibilities and Halloween or Thanksgiving make great party theme choices.
