Your birthday is a time for receiving. You may also be on the giving end if you throw a party and have party favors, refreshments and gift bags for guests. However, most people enjoy receiving gifts from friends and family on birthdays.

From Quick Guide: Giving Thanks with a Note

    Function

  1. A birthday thank you note expresses the gratitude the "birthday girl" feels for the gifts she received. In the thank you note, she should also thank the person for attending of the party, kindness and consideration shown at the party and any other favors that the friend did at the party. A thank you note should detail why she loves the gift, how it is being appreciated and used, and how it sits apart from other gifts.
  2. Time Frame

  3. Birthday thank you notes are typically sent within the week after the birthday has passed. It can take 2 to 3 weeks if the birthday celebrator is extremely busy, but it should not be delayed any later than that. A birthday thank you note is of the less formal variety than a wedding or confirmation thank you note, but its timeliness is especially important. Ideally, it should be sent a few days after the birthday.
  4. Benefits

  5. A thank you note for a birthday gift is a great way to reconnect with someone you love after the birthday party. For friends who don't get to see one another that much, it can even open the door to greater communication. Your friend has put in the effort by going to your birthday party with her awesome gift, and she will love the fact that you acknowledge her friendship and kindness with a personal note.
A thank you note can serve several purposes for a child. Assisting your child in writing thank you notes to relatives who mailed gifts and friends who attended the party is a great way to teach your child about gratitude, and about letter writing. Have your child write his address, and have him write the name and address of the person receiving the card on the envelope. Assist him in writing the note as well. A child can sometimes get stuck on what to say in a thank you note, but you can have ready ideas to help him put his thoughts into words that your relatives will certainly appreciate.
  6. Considerations

  7. A birthday thank you note should start with a personal addressing of the giver. If you have a nickname, be sure to include that as the greeting. Birthday thank you notes should be extremely personal letters.
The immediate greeting after addressing the person should be to thank them for the gift. The gift should be named and described with excitement. Immediately following that, a description of how it is being enjoyed is often included. It can then go on to describe other reasons for loving the gift and how you plan to use it in the future.
Most other aspects of the thank you note are up for grabs, but it should stay positive, stay focused on your loved one that you are thanking and it should conclude with a repetition of your gratitude.
  8. Misconceptions

  9. A birthday thank you note does not have to be a detailed letter to catch up with someone, explaining every last detail about your birthday. It can be a simple note card that expresses your gratitude. While you do want to go into detail about why you are so thankful for the gift, that is not a required notion for a thank you note. If time is the issue, simply getting out the card is the most important thing so that the person knows you appreciate his thoughtfulness. Be sure to describe the gift and your gratitude for it, and especially for his presence at your birthday.
