About Auctioneers
Going once, going twice, sold! The auctioneer is the person who runs auctions and takes bids from buyers. We see them all the time, but have you ever stopped to think about what they do? Auctioneers are much more than just the person who stands around and bangs a gavel all day. As you will see, their job is important, and for many, can be a lot of fun.

History
-
The first auctions, and thus the first auctioneers, can be traced to about 500 B.C in Babylon. These auctions were used to sell women for marriage. The auctioneer was responsible for running the auction, taking the bids, and declaring the winner, much like the auctioneers of today. Though auctions and the goods being sold have changed over the years, the auctioneer's job remains unchanged and in demand.
Function
-
An auctioneer plays a vital role the auction process. Their job is to sell the items that are up for auction. They identify the item that is for sale and start the bidding. As people bid, the auctioneer acknowledges their bid and asks if anyone would like to place a higher bid. If someone does, the auctioneer then takes the new bid and raises the price. This continues until no one is willing to go any higher. Finally, the auctioneer declares the highest bidder as the winner, and the item is sold to that person.

Significance
-
Without the auctioneer, the auction could not run smoothly. Not only do they run the selling process, but they keep track of who bid, when and for how much. Auctioneers keep track of fast-paced action and make sure the auction is run fairly and quickly. They are trained to be good at what they do, and to be able to work efficiently in a short amount of time.
Potential
-
An auctioneer has the potential to work almost anywhere. Since auctions occur all over the nation, the only limit is where the person is and isn't willing to travel. The work is something that can be learned quickly, is a fun and engaging job, and gives people career opportunities. An auctioneer can pick an area they want to work in and find a job to suit them there.
Considerations
-
Being an auctioneer can be both rewarding and hard work. For someone who likes people and the fast-paced business world, the auctioneer's job is well suited. An auctioneer must be prepared to work quickly and deal with the occasional unhappy customer who didn't win an auction or thought it was run unfairly. For those who don't handle stress well and do not enjoy working closely with other people, an auctioneer's life would seem hectic. Auctioneers are constantly in direct contact with the public.
