Ortho Evra is a contraceptive that is administered in the form of a skin patch. The active ingredients in Ortho Evra are the hormones estrogen and progestin; the same hormones that compose a number of birth control pills. While on Ortho Evra women may experience various side effects, and stopping Ortho Evra can also bring about several side effects. The side effects attributed with terminating Ortho Evra usage tend to be minor and are usually only temporary.

    Significance

  1. Ortho Evra works to decrease fertility by removing fluctuations; administering a fixed amount of estrogen and progestin throughout the skin (from the patch) and then into the bloodstream. While using Ortho Evra, these hormones are absorbed and the body becomes accustomed to their presence. After stopping Ortho Evra, the body is not receiving the study quantity of the above; this can trigger feelings of fatigue, mood swings and other disposition changes temporarily. The reason behind this stems from the significant role that hormones play in our physical and psychological well-being.
  2. Effects

  3. On the other side, some women report an increase in energy and their emotional state. This varies according to your hormone levels and which levels are best for you. Ortho Evra actually delivers a notably higher dosage of estrogen in comparison to standard birth control pills (which usually contain 35 micrograms). While on the patch, the increased levels of estrogen can actually result in an escalation of side effects, so a converse reaction may occur after stopping
  4. Features

  5. Women who go off Ortho Evra may also experience a delay in their menstrual cycle. The cycles' normalcy can take up two several months to return in some cases. Spotting may also occur. If women stop the patch because they want to become pregnant, this side effect can be a bit confusing.
  6. Considerations

  7. Additionally, there may be some delay in becoming pregnant after Ortho Evra is stopped. This is particularly the case for women who experienced irregular menstrual cycles, prior to taking the hormonal contraceptive. Health care practitioners generally recommend that women in this category delay conception until the menstruation cycle returns and is regular.
  8. Misconceptions

  9. There is a misconception regarding women who become pregnant right after stopping Ortho Evra. The confusion centers upon the false suggestion that babies have an increased risk of birth defects if they were conceived shortly after a woman discontinued taking the contraceptive. There is no clinical evidence that backs this up.

It is important to inform your doctor of any side effects after stopping Ortho Evra. This is especially true if you have gone off the patch in order to become pregnant. Supplementary information regarding Ortho Evra and its usage can be accessed by visiting one of the links below.
