About Psychic Intuition
You need not go so far as to predict the rise of a great leader or even the end of world hunger and poverty for you to know that your intuition works. While it is possible to follow in the footsteps of famous psychics and mediums even to the extent of helpfully finding missing pets and children, keep in mind that something as seemingly simple as having a high level of empathy is an indication of your psychic awareness in action. If you are interested in a greater sense of joy and fulfillment, get to know your psychic strengths so that you can consciously develop and use them to lead a richer life.

Identification

If you believe in the existence of the soul, there is no logical reason for you to not believe in what are called "psychic" abilities. After all, the root of the word "psychic" is "psyche," which is Greek for "soul." Psychic abilities are thus nothing more than soul functions. Just as you have bodily and mental functions, so too do other parts of your being have purposes of their own. Following this course of thought, intuitive abilities are a natural part of life. They may have once been considered supernatural, when humans lived in a more superstitious age, but science and spirituality are once again joining forces in contemporary times. Police investigations make use of psychics and mediums to solve cases, and tests conducted in laboratories continue to help us understand the inner workings of the psychic faculty (see Resources).
Types
-
In the psychic world, intuition actually goes beyond merely knowing without knowing how you know, as it might appear to a novice on the subject. The five physical senses each have a psychic equivalent. Intuitive seeing is "clairvoyance," hearing is "clairaudience," smelling is "clairgustance," tasting is "clairsavorance" and feeling is "clairsentience." It is common to have only one or two of these strongly developed, although it is possible to sharpen the others through exercises and meditation. Since each of us is wired differently, your psychic perception differs from that of others; for instance, clairvoyance may come effortlessly to you as you frequently see events before they come to pass, while a friend of yours is more clairsentient in that she feels the emotions of others even if they attempt to hide them.
Further examples of skills that are considered psychic are "psychometry," which involves reading an object or person's history through touch, "telepathy," or the ability to receive and transmit thoughts, and "mediumship," which is the term used for the act of communicating with the deceased and passing their messages on to friends and loved ones. -
Significance
-
Throughout history, figures such as Nostradamus, Edgar Cayce and Uri Geller have become notable for their psychic abilities. The influence of Michel de Nostredame, whom many know as Nostradamus, can still be felt centuries after his death in 1566. He is renowned for writing quatrains, or four-line poems, of a predictive nature. Believers in his work claim that he prophesied about the atom bomb, the French Revolution, Napoleon I and Adolf Hitler among others. Edgar Cayce is called "The Sleeping Prophet," as he gave readings on a variety of subjects and made predictions while in a trance. The Association for Research and Enlightenment that he founded in 1931 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, continues to operate to this day. Uri Geller is famous for using mind power to bend spoons and influence other physical objects without touching them. This particular skill is called "telekinesis" or "psychokinesis," but Geller has a reputation as well for his telepathic ability, or "extra sensory perception"--also known as ESP--which is one of the older names for the psychic gift.
In modern times, personalities like Sonia Choquette, Doreen Virtue, Esther and Jerry Hicks, John Edward and James Van Praagh have helped spread the word about psychic knowing and other spiritual abilities through their workshops, books and public demonstrations.
Effects
-
Developing your intuition grants you greater insight into yourself, your relationships and life in general. With your time and energy devoted to meditative practices and the study of metaphysical matters, you can expect to grow spiritually. Of course, psychic abilities and spirituality don't always go hand in hand. It is possible to gain a highly developed intuition without the coexistence of much spiritual awareness, as is the case with those who have clinically died and come back, this time with a more evolved sixth sense. The phenomenon, referred to as a "near-death experience," can transform even the most mundane individuals into more conscious ones as soon as they awaken from their brush with death, be it from an accident, a drug overdose or a heart attack (see Resources).
Warning
-
As you take steps to further your psychic development, make it a point to ground yourself after every intuitive exercise and each reading you give. Do this by diverting your attention back to the material world. Eating foods that come from the earth, like corn, potatoes, carrots, turnips and yams is a tactic that will help you come back down from your heightened awareness. You can also engage in a highly physical activity, such as dancing or working out. It is important to make an effort to momentarily desensitize yourself, as being fine-tuned to the spirit world at all times can be a draining experience. If you neglect to practice grounding, you may at the very least find yourself more exhausted than usual. Other symptoms that come up to remind you to take better care with your psychic exercises are headaches and colds. As with everything, balance and moderation are key.
