The first American Eagle store opened its doors in 1977. Founded by Jerry and Mark Silverstein, the concept was to create a retail clothing outlet geared to teenagers and young adults. By 1991, when the Silvermans sold their interest in the company, there were 153 stores. The following year, American Eagle began to market its own brands and de-emphasized marketing those of other companies. In 1994 the company went public and was originally listed on NASDAQ but later moved to the NYSE. By 2000, American Eagle began to expand aggressively in Canada, acquiring Thrifty stores targeting teens and young adults. American Eagle Outfitters is the flagship chain, but the company has several others. Each is a "concept" brand targeting a clearly defined market. The largest of these is Aerie, an intimate apparel store for 15- to 25-year-old women. As the Internet became an important marketing venue, American Eagle developed strong online websites. In 2008, they introduced a new line, 77Kids, which, at that time, was an online brand only.
