About CDL Driving Tests

Large commercial vehicles have been a fixture on the open roads since their invention nearly a century ago. Trucks haul any number of items, including food, furniture, and pet supplies, from one end of the world to the other, 365 days a year. Truck drivers have existed as long as the trucks themselves, and are an integral part of product transport. Most countries require that truck drivers carry a commercial driver's license, more commonly known as a CDL. Testing is required to obtain a CDL, and these exams test not only the driver's book knowledge, but also involves a driving test to ensure that the operator can safely drive these large vehicles.

  1. History

    • The first driver's license was issued to the inventor of the modern car, Karl Benz, in the late 1880's. As larger vehicles were created and used to haul freight, a special license was developed for drivers of these vehicles. Called commercial licenses, these licenses are designed to test the skills necessary for the operation of larger vehicles. These tests may vary slightly depending on country, although the basic skill tests remain the same.

    Significance

    • The exact requirements for the CDL test will change according to location, but there are two basic sections. The test is normally made up of a written exam and an actual driving test. The written portion of the test covers all of the skills that a driver needs to know regarding proper policies while on the road. Subjects such as street signs, proper speeds, and height and weight restrictions are included on the written test. The driver must do a walk-around and examine his vehicle, noting all the proper parts are attached, such as mud flaps, and in working order. The driver then drives a set course, completing a number of turns, stops, and backing exercises. Upon successful completion of all exercise, a valid CDL license will be issued.

    Function

    • The CDL test is used to determine that a driver is knowledgeable and skillful enough to properly drive such a large vehicle. The test is normally given after a probationary period during which the driver is permitted to drive commercial vehicles under supervision. CDL tests can be given in any location that is large enough to allow for the driver to operate the truck, and can be administered in any weather conditions.

    Benefits

    • Commercial driver's license testing ensures the operator is skilled in operating large vehicles and knows the rules pertaining to them. CDL testing also helps to track that is legal to drive a commercial vehicle and helps the states and law enforcement agencies know which drivers can legally operate them. A thorough testing process also helps to weed out those that might pose a hazard to fellow drivers on the road.

    Warning

    • Those wishing to take the CDL examination should study and practice well before the test date. The testing process is very thorough and extensive, and knowing all of the necessary skills beforehand will save driver time and frustration. There are numerous pre-tests and study guides available for those interested in taking the CDL test, and these can be a valuable asset in becoming a licensed commercial driver.
