Theories/Speculation

Oxidation of metal is the culprit that causes carpet rust. Usually, metal surfaces can touch carpet without any issues arising. However, if a room has a high level of humidity, it can cause unattractive red or brownish stains to occur (otherwise known as carpet rust). Another reason for rust to occur is if carpet becomes damp or wet, either from rainwater brought in from shoes or clothing, toilet overflow, spills, pet urine, or other reasons.
Identification
-
In order to remove carpet rust stains yourself, there are a few things you will need to have. Many of these things you will already have available in your home. These items include lemon juice, paper towels, spray bottles, dishwashing detergent, white hand towels and utility knives.

Prevention/Solution
-
Be sure to scrape off any rust from the carpet with a dull utility knife. Then spray the entire stain with lemon juice in a spray bottle. Leave the juice on the stain for 5 to 10 minutes. Then blot the stain using paper towels. Mix a quarter teaspoon of dish detergent with one quart of water. Then put the mix on a clean white towel and softly blot the solution into the stain until the stain is entirely gone. Next, spray the area with plain water. Afterward, blot it with a towel until the detergent mix is eliminated from the carpet. Wait for the carpet to dry completely, and then proceed to vacuum.
