About Private Investigation

Private investigation is a job which consists of gathering information about an individual or a company. This type of investigation is usually initiated by a person who is interested in finding things out about other people or agencies. The person requesting that this investigation take place usually does not have the means to do the investigating himself so he hires a private investigator.

  1. History

    • The private investigation industry was in its infancy in the mid 1800s, when most of the jobs involved protecting the interests of the wealthy. Large companies would hire private investigators to control their workers. The most famous private investigation agency in that day was started by Alan Pinkerton and is recorded to have prevented an assassination attempt on the life of Abraham Lincoln. The role of private investigations has changed measurably over the last two centuries, with the technology era broadening the scope of those investigations.

    Significance

    • The changing climate and morals of the country and world as a whole has had a major impact on the business operations of private investigations. Today men and women are seeking the services of private investigators more than ever to determine wrong doing in cases of infidelity. The greater need for insurance requires more investigation against fraud. The industry has changed as demographics and lifestyles have changed. More people are trying to disappear or hide from mainstream society, for whatever reason, and this creates a need for private investigation services.

    Types

    • There are different types of private investigators. Some only do investigations using computers, software and the Internet. Others will conduct research and interviews to locate missing persons. They might do their work locally, in person, or over the telephone or they might have to travel some distance. Some investigators will only be involved in surveillance operations, where they are hired to determine the activities of an individual. In cases of insurance fraud or infidelity, this type of investigator would be sought out to observe and gather information.

    Considerations

    • There is not any formal training to work in private investigations, although many individuals employed in this industry have completed some degree of higher education. This type of work usually attracts applicants from law enforcement, military and legal backgrounds and most of these people have already taken some criminal justice courses. Specialists, such as those who garner information using computers and the Internet may be required to have computer science degrees. With the exception of a few states, most states require that private investigators be licensed.

    Warning

    • Private investigation can be a dangerous career. An investigator may be required to take on another identity in the course of his work. This is called going undercover. Many times the information a private investigator is seeking to find is something that another individual or party wishes to remain secret and that individual will go to great means to prevent the information from being uncovered. It can be a dangerous job and this is one of the reasons why many investigators get bonded to carry firearms.
