There are numerous craft kits on the market today that are suitable for teenagers. The new crafter or the experienced teen hobbyist has a wide variety of crafts from which to choose according to their personal taste. A quick trip to a mass merchandise store gives a teen or gift giver at least a dozen kits from which to choose. The challenge may be in deciding which kit to buy first.

    Function

  1. Craft kits are a good way to introduce a young person to a new or more advanced hobby. There is a wide range of crafts that have been condensed to kit projects. They're available for every level of experience and interest to provide a challenge for teen girls and boys. Some kits assume that the owner of the kit has essential items already in the home such as scissors, markers, adhesives, glue gun, knitting needles or crochet hooks and fiberfill stuffing. If the kit is a gift for a teen, be sure to read the box or bag to determine what you may need to include for the teen to complete the project.
A craft kit is a teaching aid for a teen. He will learn how to develop a craft skill and spend anywhere from as little as an hour a week to several hours of crafting time on the weekend. Many craft kits will build a teen's math skills and reading comprehension along with their confidence and creativity levels.
  2. History

  3. The production of craft kits on a mass level began in the 1950s and 60s. One of the first kits that children and teenagers found interesting was the small metal weaving loom. Loops of cloth were woven into potholders, place mats and scarves. The first few years wood burning, paint by number, candle making, beading, tie dying and Christmas ornaments came on to the hobby scene in kit form. In the 1970s teens could find macrame, leather tooling, string art and plastic canvas needlepoint kits to make plant hangers, belts, pocket books and three-dimensional crafts. Teens crafted items to decorate their rooms, give as gifts and sell.
  4. Considerations

  5. Young teens, age 13 to 15, or those who are new crafters can start out with basic "learn to" kits. Learn to knit, paint by number, paint plaster crafts, crochet, needlepoint and more. A more advanced teen with basic craft knowledge will do well with specific project kits. A teen that knows how to knit or crochet will appreciate an afghan kit. Those who show a desire and talent with paint by number will be comfortable with an oil, acrylic or watercolor painting kit. A 16 year old who has become proficient in wood burning or painting birdhouses will enjoy the challenge of a build a bird or doll house kit.
You will find many stores have a craft section with kits available. There are also Internet sites for craft stores, mass merchandisers, eBay and scrapbooking suppliers with a much larger variety of kits to choose from. If you are purchasing craft kits for a teen as a gift and are uncertain of what to get, consider a gift certificate for a reputable craft store or Internet site.
A kit must have all components to complete an entire project. It should include a pattern, step by step instructions and materials. You can also assemble a kit of your own for a teen in a craft with which you are experienced.
  6. Types

  7. Today the craft kit industry is seemingly limitless. Teens can become involved in kits that can create professional looking items. Some of the kits include card making, scrapbooks, crochet, journals, knitting, plastic canvas, belt decorating, pocket books, rockets, countless models, dioramas, origami, rubber stamping, bobbin lace, weaving and stained glass. Items continue to be made by teens to use to decorate homes, give as gifts or for wearable art.
  8. Benefits

  9. Crafting is a great stress buster for a teen. The simple act of sitting and working on a craft focuses the mind. A teen can work alone while crafting in a relaxing atmosphere or join in with a group. It is a way to express themselves and let their creativity flow. Many professional artists and crafters started by crafting as a child, developing their talent during the teen years as they selected crafts that interested them the most.
