About Animal Groomers

Animal groomers work to ensure that animals are neat in appearance and clean for health and safety reasons, as well as for the visual appearance of the animal. Some animal groomers train informally by learning on a family farm; others attend grooming school. Like other animal specialists, there are groomers for different types of animals in a variety of locations.

  1. Function

    • The primary function of an animal groomer is to provide a safe experience for the pet and the groomer. Various grooming tools, such as a grooming noose (which functions to hold a dog or cat in place on a table) and proper grooming scissors assist the groomer in fulfilling this requirement. Groomers typically work for clients such as farmers or pet owners, and they aim to groom the animals in a manner contracted by their clients.

    Types

    • A shedding blade, typically used by horse groomers

There are many different types of animal groomers, the most popular of which are horse and small animal groomers. Horse groomers use their own sets of tools, such as shedding blades. They have specific knowledge about horse hoof, mane and tail care. Dog groomers clean and clip dog breeds for comfort and cleanliness, also clipping dogs to specific breed standards when applicable for show. Groomers work in commercial storefronts, out of their homes, in clients' homes and in mobile units.

    Time Frame

    • The time it takes to groom an animal varies depending upon the size, breed and temperament of the animal being groomed. It will also vary upon the level of trust and familiarity between the groomer and the animal. Generally, a dog grooming session takes 40 minutes to 3 hours, depending on what is being done.

    Benefits

    • Scottish Terrier, properly groomed

Animal groomers love animals, and they are given the opportunity to work with animals as part of the job. Many animal groomers also own their own businesses or work on a freelance basis, allowing them to make their own hours. There are also some benefits to the animal being groomed. Grooming lessens the possibility for ear infections and injury due to overgrown nails, for example.

    Considerations

    • Despite the freedoms and joys associated with being an animal groomer, there are also difficulties to consider. There are no specific licenses in pet grooming, even though there are specific certifications. While this makes it easier to open a grooming business, it also allows less protection for the groomer.
