Drain tiles should be placed by foundation footers instead of on top of them. By doing this, you can lower your water table by 6 to 8 inches below the floor of your basement. Right after the footer forms are taken out, install your drain tile. Cover the drainpipe with the gravel to a level flush with the footer's top. Then waterproof the walls and backfill the drainpipe with a minimum of 3 feet of thick gravel. Once the gravel is securely in place, cover it with one layer of roofing felt paper. This border will stop silt from the backfill dirt from clogging the drain tiles and gravel.

Modern-day drain tiles are usually 4-inch black polyethylene or PVC plastic pipes. They are perforated on only one side. The side that is perforated is always facing down to ensure that the water comes in from underneath the pipe. Filter paper is usually put on top of the pipe to keep sediment from entering and clogging the pipe.
