About Carpeting Stairs

You need to take different things into consideration when carpeting stairs than when you carpet a flat surface. The carpeting needs to be stronger, You need to know about fibers, which are strong enough to take the wear and tear. It is a matter of safety for everyone who uses them. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Types

    • Stairs are one of the high-traffic areas in the home. Nylon is the most popular fiber for stairway carpeting. It has been much improved over the years. Wool is also a good choice, but it is one of the most expensive, and some people are allergic to wool. Polyester is cheaper than nylon, but not quite as strong. Carpets made of Olefin, Berber and Acrylic are not as strong and have a tendency to mat up.

    Function

    • Carpeting stairs adds a decorative touch to the home, protects the stairs from damage and deadens the sound from everyone going up and down. It also makes a visual connection from one floor to another. There are two ways to carpet stairs. You can cover the whole staircase with one continuous roll of carpet or you can have it cut to fit the stair and the riser and just have a piece to step on and protect the riser from being kicked.

    Warning

    • If the carpeting is not properly installed or if it wears out, it can become a hazard. And any trouble is hard to spot unless you really look for it. Inspect the carpeting regularly. Make sure it is in tight and is not wearing out on the ends. If it is, have it tightened or replaced as soon as possible, before someone's foot finds a hole.

    Expert Insight

    • I have learned from experience the importance of carpeting stairs with heavy duty carpeting. We used the same carpeting as in the rest of the house and on the stairs it wore out while the rest was still in good shape. It is not necessary to exactly match the rest of the carpet. It can actually make a more dramatic effect if the is a different, but related color. And do not use patterns on stairs. What looks like a perfect pattern on the floor can look like a jumble on stairs.

    Potential

    • The carpeting industry is constantly doing research to make the fibers tougher and more stain resistant. When you shop for carpeting, you will see it referred to as a generation. The higher the generation, the newer the technology involved.
