I have learned from experience the importance of carpeting stairs with heavy duty carpeting. We used the same carpeting as in the rest of the house and on the stairs it wore out while the rest was still in good shape. It is not necessary to exactly match the rest of the carpet. It can actually make a more dramatic effect if the is a different, but related color. And do not use patterns on stairs. What looks like a perfect pattern on the floor can look like a jumble on stairs.
